5 Stocking Stuffers Approved by Your Dentist

Now that the holiday season is here, you’re probably looking for some small gifts to put in your family’s stockings. Candy is often a favorite choice, but if you would rather pick a gift that doesn’t carry a risk of leading to cavities, your dentist may have a few ideas. Below are 5 smile-friendly suggestions for stocking stuffers.

1. A Water Flosser

Flossing is important for preventing gum disease, but some people find it difficult to get into the habit because they have trouble using traditional string floss. A water flosser can be a great alternative for cleaning between the teeth and other hard-to-reach spaces in the mouth. This can be an excellent gift for adults and teenagers; try looking online to see what kinds of water flossers are available.

2. A New Toothbrush

According to the American Dental Association, it’s best to switch to a new toothbrush every three to four months. If your loved ones are due to get new toothbrushes soon, why not get them some for the holidays? For the children in your family, you can look for toothbrushes decorated with their favorite characters. Meanwhile, older family members may be happy to get an electric toothbrush that’s potentially better at removing plaque than a manual one.

3. Toothpaste with Fun Flavors

If anyone in your family is less than fond of the taste of mint, they may appreciate getting toothpaste in alternative flavors such as fruit or bubblegum. Of course, it’s not enough for toothpaste to taste great; it also still needs to do a good job of protecting your loved one’s smile. Before you buy any type of toothpaste, make sure that it has the ADA Seal of Approval.

4. Snacks That are Good for the Teeth and Gums

Who doesn’t appreciate finding a good snack in their stocking? But instead of simply giving your loved ones candy, try looking for options that can promote oral health, such as:

  • Certain nuts such as almonds, Brazil nuts, and cashews which can help protect the smile from harmful oral bacteria.
  • Sugar-free gum that can encourage saliva production in order to keep the mouth clean.
  • Raisins that contain phytochemicals, which can make plaque easier to remove.

5. A Dental Hygiene Kit

Do you have a loved one that’s out and about a lot? You can help them take better care of their smile with a well-stocked dental hygiene kit that includes:

  • A miniature toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste.
  • Flavored dental floss.
  • A small mirror (for checking the teeth for food particles).
  • Lip balm.
  • A small container of mouthwash.

The right gift can put a smile on your loved one’s face – and the gifts above will go a long way toward making sure that smile stays safe.
